First, to make it clear, I agree on the general necessity of having drivers help out by spending a half day at pit out (if they're not otherwise assisting, e.g., with tech, as instructors, etc.).

My question is whether so many people are truly needed.  Wouldn't two people suffice as minimal but adequate staffing at any one time -- in which case, two people from green and two from blue would seem to be all that are needed to ensure continuous two person coverage?

Or does [over]staffing, with as many as perhaps 10 people, result from the reasonable principle that every DE participant should contribute, and there's no other way to better constructively deploy drivers so arguably a few more people than might seem necessary at any one time is not a big deal, and is fair?

P.S. Sure, it's not as if there are lots of very important other things I'd rather be engaged in; there are only so many times I can check tire pressures, wash my windshield, etc.  And track duty is a good way to meet and chat with other drivers.  So I'm not trying to avoid duty -- indeed, it would be fine with me if I had to spend a whole day on duty.  (And maybe after Rick reads these comments that's what I'll discover happens to me at my next event Smile .)
