I have been chasing an irratic (that is irritating and erratic) clutch return action for four years.  After replacing everything between the engine and the master cylinder (with little improvement), we recently fixed the problem, and it was cheap.

The clutch return in a 964 has two levels of resistance - heavy near the floor and lighter near the top.  My pedal would sometimes stick at the point between the two, which left the pedal 1 - 1.5 inches lower than normal.  I could pull the pedal to normal height with my foot.  This was not a terminal problem since clutch engagement was not affected with brand new hydraulics.  However, it was annoying during DE.

Applying the following factory update cured the problem last week:

Basically, the correct 964/993 "clutch kinematic lever" should be olive in color, not gold or silver.  Attached is a PDF copy of the web instructions in case the link goes dead in the future.  Good luck.
