CONCORD, NC—A paralyzing fear of precipitation kept dozens of highly skilled competition drivers, all of them trained to drive roll-cage equipped cars mere inches from one another at speeds exceeding 200 miles per hour for extended periods of time, from finishing the Coca-Cola 600 Monday. "I'm overjoyed to win the race, but I'm even more relieved that I didn't have to face the worst horror known to the professional racer: falling moisture," said David Reutimann, who was declared the winner when officials pronounced the track "horrifyingly damp" after only 227 laps and halted NASCAR's longest race. "Every race driver, except for maybe the guys in Formula One, and the Le Mans drivers, the Rolex Series, and rally drivers, I guess, and those guys in amateur racing...anyway, every single racing driver knows that if you drive in the rain you will automatically crash. No one in NASCAR wants to see crashes." Reutimann then thanked his sponsors and rushed off to hide in his motor home until the sun came out.

I love racing in the rain, slip slidin away, teaches you car control on the edge.

Real drivers drive in the rain.  Chimps in racing suits "race" NASCAR.

I raced a 1987 Woods Brothers #21 Ford T-Bird at the Glen 10 years ago and I will tell you it was like driving an 850Hp bus. Took almost no effort to drive, I see why Nascar drivers can last 2 to 3 hrs in the cars. They just don't ware you out. With cool suits, cool helmets and fluids to drink it is really effortless. I ran a 2hr enduro at the Glen with SVRA, what I did learn was how to use the curbs to drive faster. I now hit every one in the Mustang and what a blast it is to do that. I re-sprung the car to be able to use the curbs. Those cars are soooooo easy to drive. We had run VIR with the cup car and it rained but we put rains on the car and it drove at race speeds with no problem. I don't see why Nascar does not drive in the rain. Spectator and TV driven racing is the real answer why they don't.

Would that be a Bill Elliot car?

- dmano - 12-29-2009

No, Neil Bonnet's last road course car he drove before he died. We did a full restoration on the car in the late 90's, back to it's original colors.

Was that car out at a garage by Possum Hollow in Pheonixville about ten years ago?

Close, the shop was on 23 past the big fire house in Spring City

If it was an old car dealership with a lounge up front, that was being marketed as a car club, then I have not only seen, but have heard that car run.  Inside no less.
