When I start my 84 Targa on Cold mornings, I get a rough idle, accompanied by some backfires.

Replaced all filters, replaced the intake gaskets, plugs....you name it.  And still no smooth idle.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Yo Chris,

Three packs a day, smokes and sixes, will do that to you. Ooops!

my bad, you're asking about your car.   Tongue

Could be the cylinder head temp sensor.  If I remember correctly, the DME uses that to gauge the amount of cold enrichment needed on startups.  Does the motor setttle down after a few minutes of running?

Thanks Larry.  I know you have a ton of experience with cars of my vintage.

It actually will quiet down once it warms up.  Now do you think it is the head sensor or the Idle Air valve?  When I put power to that valve it just sounds like it is spinning around.

Maybe I should replace both.
