Our race weekend started pretty rough when we lost two very experienced racers in the first practice session when a car dropped antifreeze.  Fortunately everyone walked away.  Also, without full safety gear this would have a major visit to the hospital.

and the other car:

and that is Darren narrowly escaping.

Very true. Bad crashes that could have been avoided.

All bad and avoidable with a cheap remedy.  The topic has been broached here before and with surprising frequency on Rennlist.   While it may not be practicable for DE, I'm surprised this wasn't mandated for racing.

It is mandated for racing.  Some people are jerks though.

Not cool at all (pardon the pun) when participants' safety is in question.

- Darren - 08-25-2010

Nope, he got a $100 fine and meanwhile caused about $20k+ worth of damage.

Complete BS IMO.

We all assume risk with DE and racing, however if there is a clear violation that jeopardizes others and causes damage that individual should be liable.  Perhaps I'm too firm on this, but I think that would strongly dissuade others from being so reckless.

Erik,

While it is mandatory for racing it should also be considered for DE in any run group while it is warm outside.   To flush the system in the spring and run without antifreeze would be a good safety precaution  and good maintenance practice.  I have seen plenty of seasoned DE/racers ignore this with similar results.  The BMW behind Darren was going 118mph when he hit the patch.  Lucky not to be in the hospital.   Darren missed this happening to him by maybe 2 seconds.

I was directly behind the car dropping the anti-freeze.  The only reason I didn't spin was because the offending car had slowed me down -- I was going maybe 5/10ths when I hit the anti-freeze.  Had I been going full speed I would have been off, no doubt.  As it was I went a little sideways and caught it.

I agree with you guys. It is no big deal to flush the system and put water in the cooling system......... even if you put Perier, it is cheap.Confusedhock:

Should I change the coolant in my early 911? Can someone help me find the location of the radiator cap?
