As a board member of the Exploring Joara Foundation and a European car enthusiast, I am writing to invite you to participate in the first “Touring Joara,? an 81 mile European-style automotive tour through western North Carolina. We will be driving some of the region’s most scenic and historic roads just at the peak of fall colors on Saturday, October 23rd, 2010.

“Touring Joara? is a fundraising event to benefit the Exploring Joara Foundation and its efforts to establish and support a regional public archaeology program. In recent years, 16th-century artifacts have been discovered at the Berry site and at Catawba Meadows Park in Morganton, NC.

Artifacts unearthed at the Berry site indicate that it is the location of the Native American town of Joara and Fort San Juan, one of a series of forts built by Spanish explorer Juan Pardo in 1567. The Berry site is possibly the oldest European settlement in the interior United States – predating Jamestown and the Lost Colony. The Catawba Meadows site appears to have a similar Native American structure and will be excavated this summer. “Touring Joara? provides a fun and exciting opportunity for European and Sports Car enthusiast to enjoy the fall colors, great scenery and winding curves of western NC while helping to unearth and preserve significant archaeological sites.

Adding to the “Touring Joara? fun will be a poker run with five stops to collect your poker hand. At 2:30 till 4:00, drivers will gather at Catawba Meadows to reveal their poker hand and receive a commemorative “Touring Joara? touring badge for his or her vehicle. Awards donated in part by ACE Hardware, Advance Auto Parts, AUTOZONE, LOWES, NAPA Auto Parts, and O’Reilly Auto Parts, will be presented to the best 10 hands.

The cost is just $75 per car and a percentage of the registration fee is a tax deductible donation to Exploring Joara Foundation, a 501(3)c nonprofit. Founded in 2008, Exploring Joara Foundation seeks to advance archaeological research in the Catawba and Yadkin river valleys.

I look forward to sharing this adventure with you and other European and Sports Car enthusiasts.
