AWD helps you accelerate in low traction conditions, but you everyone has all wheel brakes and with low traction that can catch you out. Watch this.

It's really a matter of knowing your car, and yourself, which, it seems many do not.  Perhaps AWD and traction control are giving people a false sense of capability.

Interesting that in many of the accidents the driver seemed to just hold on the brakes, never trying to steer through the skid.

Maybe a winter driving course should be mandatory. (or at least get you an insurance discount)  I can still remember my dad taking me to an empty parking lot and teaching me how to counter a skid.

This kind of weather combined with drivers who have not a clue is what body shops dream about.   I spoke to a guy today that totalled his car yesterday morning on the NE extension of the turnpike. It was rainy and wet.  Hydroplaned, spun out and the rest is history.  I asked him if he tried to counter steer the spin.  He looked at me like I had two heads.  He told me he is lucky to be alive.
