Crab Cruise on Saturday Sept 6th - saucerman - 08-28-2014

Sorry for the late notice - I just got this....looks like a great ride

10th Annual Tri-State Crab Cruise*

Come on down to the Boondocks and join us for the Tri-State Crab Feast Cruise on Saturday, September 6th (rain date Sunday, September 7th). It all starts at the Winterthur Museum parking lot (6 miles NW off I-95, Exit 7, on SR52 in Wilmington, DE) and heads west through Northern Delaware estates and Southeastern Pennsylvania mushroom farms, then turns south for lunch and a swim at Elk Neck State Park along the Chesapeake Bay (pack a picnic basket). After lunch the drive continues east with a stop in historic Chesapeake City, passes by Maryland horse farms, reenters Delaware and heads south on SR9 along the Delaware Bay ending at the Boondocks Restaurant just east of Smyrna for our crab feast.

The route includes almost every covered bridge in Delaware (two out of three) and three more in Pennsylvania. And, the crabs are great. We hope anyone within reasonable (four-hour) driving distance and able to commandeer a 981 (or any other Porsche) will join us.

Time: Arrive between 9:30 and 9:45 with a full tank of gas. We’ll leave at 10am sharp.

Bring a Box Lunch

Swimming Hole: Chesapeake Bay – Elk Neck State Park, Maryland. Bring swim suit, towels and inflatable beach toys if you’d like to get wet (Important: at least one person from each car must get in up to their knees). This is also our lunch stop (with picnic tables and first class indoor plumbing including showers).

Chesapeake City: Our early afternoon stop is on the National Historic Registry, as well as Maryland's Historic Registry. The town has many restored historic homes and shops, and galleries, featuring hand-painted originals and prints, antiques, collectibles, clothing, gifts and crafts. We’ll stop for exploring, ice cream cones, watching yachts along the canal, and picking out a nice bed & breakfast for a return visit.

Crab Feast: The Boondocks, Smryna, Delaware. Fantastic crabs and plenty of other choices for non-crab lovers.

Lodging: If you’d like to come early or stay late, E-Mail me for suggestions on where to stay.

If you’re planning to join us, please email Stu at oba@ockman.us to sign up and receive further info as it becomes available. See you on September 6th.

Here is a little bit more info for anyone considering joining us this Saturday:

• The rain date is now a yet to be determined Sunday in August 2015 (the day after next year’s cruise); I've been offered an Eagles ticket for this Sunday's game. That means we’ll run this cruise on Saturday whether it rains or not, as long as at least one of you would like to join us. There are covered picnic areas at Elk Neck State Park, and you won't have to go into the Chesapeake Bay if it's raining.

• The first covered bridge we cross is the Wooddale Bridge. The original was built around 1850 and destroyed by flood in 2003. The replacement bridge was completed in 2008).

• Next is the Ashland Bridge built in 1860. It is the only original covered bridge in Delaware still standing. Sadly, the Ashland Bridge was severely damaged in a hit-and-run accident with a tall truck on August 1st this year (pic from The News Journal shows the damage). The truck ran after the accident; the bridge is still there.

• Our covered bridge odyssey continues into SE PA where we cross the Rudolph and Arthur Bridge (1880), 80 feet long (http://www.pacoveredbridges.com/chester-county/rudolph-arthur-bridge-photo/), the Linton Stevens Bridge (1866), 102 feet long (http://www.pacoveredbridges.com/chester-county/linton-stevens-photos/) and the Glen Hope Bridge(1889), 65 feet long (http://www.pacoveredbridges.com/chester-county/glen-hope-bridge-photos/). Glen Hope was reconstructed in 1991. These are all SE of US1.

• That’ll bring us close to our picnic lunch stop (and swim if the weather cooperates).

I’ll let the rest of the cruise speak for itself for now. Hope to see ya there! Smile
