Second, at the Glen two years ago I pitted next to an instructor. His student went through grid tech, but then changed wheels before the first session on the first day. He forgot to torque the lugnuts and felt them loosen while going up the esses. He told his instructor and the pulled off onto the back straight grass. When the tow truck got to them they found that all the nuts had come off and the wheel was just on the studs, loose. They found all the nuts, torqued the wheel back on and drove in to the pits. Disaster averted, just! Of course few of us could look at the student over rest of the three days without thinking of his error.

Chris, unable to run the video, but I think that I get the picture.
Just remember that someone lost a wheel on Pocono at our MAW in 09/05.

Ouch! That was painful to watch. I hate to think of the damage that caused and how much to cost to fix.
Not cool. I wonder how much lack of attention it takes to lose all four wheels like that.

That really was too bad. I am constantly reminding the techs that work for me to be sure the lug nuts are tightened properly. I have seen where a tech forgets to torque the lug bolts on someone's car and the wheel came off. Luckily in the parking lot so no one was hurt but that kind of stuff happens on a daily basis at shops all over the U.S. To me, that's just a reminder that we need to slow down and not get so caught up in the excitement and getting away from the basics. Nice post.

I think that the video was down for a bit yesterday. I viewed it. It's one of those that you really start to question the authenticity of it - especially after reading that someone next to him in the pits saw him tighten every bolt, etc.
I'm sure that it can happen, but it just seemed to "convenient".

The Rennlist thread says that he did tighten the lugbolts, but that they were the wrong size. I doubt anyone would do that to a car on purpose.

I read that, too. How can you not know that they weren't the right size?

Apparently the story is he got new wheels and they came with the "Proper" sized bolts but apparently they were too short and only had 4-5 turns where they were actually grabbing, Torqueing them properly just hastened the stripping of those 4-5 threads that were grabbing.
