Today it was announced that the Jefferson 500 on May 18-20 at Summit Point main circuit was to be cancelled. The reason given was due to dimenished registration did not make a financially viable event. I do not participate in the event but for the last 4-5 years my father & I have always gone to this event if for anything to admire the cars in the pits or the various car clubs that would have a display out near Turn 9. It was part of the whole beginning of summer ritual that we all have. Plus it gave me a chance to spend some time with my little boy without my wife & daughter.

Why is it that the once crown jewel event of the year of Summit Point Motorsports Park has seemed to have lost some of its luster? I remember going last year and I have to admit there were not nearly as many entries as years past. There used to be some really trick vintage race cars. Stuff that you hardly ever see anymore. Forget about the Porsches, there were things like vintage Can-ams, Fiats, Ferraris, Lotuses, MGs, Austin Healeys, Mustangs, the list goes on & on.

I can only imagine that Brian Redman and Bill Scott must be absolutely furious about having to cancel the event. What is it about going around in a circle to the left that gets people so excited that making right hand turns doesn't? What is NASCAR doing so well that they are appealing to even the meagerest of race fans that the rest of the racing sport can't seem to do to create interest and excitement? If you are in Europe and you are a professional racer, you are a GOD! Here in the states, your name is what? Michael Schumacher, what do you do? But I bet you any amount of money, you ask anyone who Dale Earnhardt or Jeff Gordon or any other nastycar driver is they'll be able to tell you and probably what car and car number they drive.

One of the neatest things about the Jefferson 500 was the nostalgia it had for taking you back into the 70's, 60's, & even earlier. I'm not from that era, but as I get older I appreciate what that race has given me,  a chance to make a connection with my father and his affection for motorsport. I truly hope that it comes back next year.

Mike that is a bummer..... but....................... having raced on Summit and watching the SCCA guys deal with the track conditions last weekend,  I think Bill needs to invest in some asphalt to get guys with $$$$ machines to run them on the track at speed.  Hell, I did not even bother to stiffen my suspension to SP on Monday because of the bumps all over the track.

Bob you are correct, that (asphalt) seems to be the thing guys dislike most about that track.

Mike,

I attended that event for a few years with the 356 club. We would hang @ T9 and browse the paddock. It really was a great event. If you enjoy the Jefferson 500, you would REALLY like the Zippo Grand Prix @ The Glen.

Bob - you are dead on! I really like SP - esp because it is close to home. They should not invest another penny down there w/o re-paving SP first. The problem is supply and demand. If folks keeps paying, why should you invest in re-paving? Maybe this will be the wakeup call they need.

Tony, for whatever reason the link is not working. Probably because the dealership I work at is afraid people will be looking at porn all day long so they have blocked most web access. I'll take a look at it when I get home tonight. You are correct, I would probably love going the Zippo event.

I have been racing with SVRA for 10 years now and SP was one of our greatest party event weekends until SVRA stopped going because of the track conditions. SVRA cars are the nicest around and worth a lot of money most are original race cars from the hay days.  The Glen IS the best show around to go see the best pedigree cars from racing history. I run a 1972 Celica that Janett Guthery drove in the Trans Am series dubed the Bumble Bee and crew on 3 Gt1 Trans Am Corvettes all Ex- Greenwood Corvettes and 1 SCCA Escort Series ZR1 If you have never been to the Zippo event it is a must do if you want to see well over 300 million dollars worth of racing history. For you Porsche guys there is always about 50+ there.
