After previous battery checked out as defective (was overheating and emitting odor into the car), installed a new battery. New battery becomes VERY hot during driving and imits odors into car as well.........................

It would seem from what you are describing that you are cooking your battery. When a battery recieves to much voltage it gets hot and emits gas. You need to use a voltage meter and check the voltage being delivered at the battery terminals. I think anything over 12.6 volts will have this effect on the battery.

I was thinking along the same lines. Possibly the alternator is overcharging but not so much as to throw the battery warning light on in the instrument cluster. I'd say voltage regulator based on that description. Depending on the age of the previous battery, may have been the fate of it as well. Brian, you are correct 12.6v is full battery charge on that car.
Please let us know what the result was once the car is diagnosed and repaired.

My buddy had the same problem. After I installed the new voltage regulator, everything worked fine.

I agree about the overcharging. Most regulators will supply about 14 volts under normal charging, and taper it back as the battery becomes re-charged.

Thanks all......it was the voltage regulator. Coulda/woulda done it ourselves, but with RTR's 50th coming in a few days, Holberts did the fix.
BTW- great job on RTR's 50th celebration!!! Obviously alot of coordination work by numerous people.
