- larrybard - 08-21-2007 Could the driver who had a homemade (Home Depot sourced materials) roof rack (on a Yakima base) on his Porsche contact me privately? Or could someone remind me who it was? He was somewhere in the neighborhood of garage 25. Not wanting to escalate equipment (e.g., by acquiring a trailer) seriously beyond what I already have -- except perhaps upgrading to a spare set of track tires -- the idea of a roof rack large enough to carry 4 wheels has great appeal to me. Thanks, Larry - Wally - 08-21-2007 Larry, it may have been Don Appelstien. He ususall carries his tires on his roof. Wally - larrybard - 08-21-2007 I believe you are correct. Nick (who also has one) suggested it was Don after I had posted my inquiry. Thanks. - fasthonda - 08-22-2007 john phillips used to drive to and from the track with his tires on the roof, too!!! todd - APXD 30 - 08-25-2007 Larry, The guys in the S2000 Hondas had carried wheels and tools in these to SP. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=90153 - John_Janick - 08-25-2007 APXD 30 wrote: Quote:Larry,^^^And you guys can probably get a quick-release hitch set-up so you don't have to run with it on the car. - larrybard - 08-25-2007 Great suggestion. Looks like it would effectively satisfy my modest needs. And the price is certainly right. I have never towed anything (in any vehicle) but I'm confident I could get comfortable with it. My main concern (unless I'm overlooking something else that I ought to worry about) is how much space it might take up. Doesn't look too bad, but space (and my wife's tolerance) is limited, inasmuch as we have 6 cars, with another on the way, and room for only one in our garage (which is also overflowing with odds and ends, including far too many wheels). I'm being prodded into buying some sort of small storage shed, so maybe a small trailer would be one of the occupants. Many thanks! - Terry - 08-25-2007 Larry, I did it that way for 2 or 3 years. You don't need a special rack - just 2 regular Thule or other racks, with the tires vertical (the Phillips method) or horizontal (my preferred approach). Call me for details if you want. You will definitely look like Ralph the Racer, but there is some work involved in setting up and reconfiguring each time. - larrybard - 08-26-2007 Terry, I assume that when you say you "did it that way" you mean with a roof rack, rather than with a trailer. I did speak to Don at Summit and sketched out the configuration of his rack there. In addition, Nick was very helpful, describing how he uses a roof rack to carry wheels vertically (and he also said he might be able to send me pictures). There are some distinct advantages (though, concededly, not without some minor disadvantages) to the mini trailer, such as no significant work involved each time I want to use it. But what really strikes me as particularly attractive is that although I have to study the trailer more closely, it looks as if I could use it to carry more than just four track tires. As you know, David and I both share the 993, and that state of affairs is likely to continue indefinitely. (Chances are, even with his limited availability for DE events, due to school, he'll be in white before I'm in blue, if that ever actually happens). And especially with the roll bar, which results in use of the rear "seat" space for any storage being severely limited, it's a real challenge for both of us to fit everything into the 993, even with our extraordinarily spartan packing (we're guys so how many changes of underwear do we really need? Oops - I guess that's TMI). If we used a roof rack, I'm beginning to think that we wouldn't have any space for the tools we'd need -- jack, posts, etc. - Terry - 08-26-2007 One major problem - no one ever came up with a good solution to where to mount a trailer hitch on a 993 rear. The only possible solution involved using the rear bumper brackets and the screw hole for the toe eye under the license plate. I looked at this and gave up, but that was many years ago and someone may have solved it since. I'm curious so let me know. |
