- dkjporsche - 09-25-2006 Hello RTR members. Any suggestions for cold air intake/replacement for factory air box for '99 996. Can I add intake with out chip? - smankow - 09-25-2006 Welcome! Yes, you can add cold air intake without adding a chip since they aren't interrelated. The chip adjusts the engine management computer to change how it runs (HP, Torque, etc.) The intake works to make the engine operate more efficient by increasing the flow of cold air into the engine. This will naturally increase the HP, torque, etc. Steve - smankow - 09-25-2006 As for the brand, K&N seems to be the popular choice as well as EVO (evolution) Steve - Wellardmac - 09-25-2006 I have an Evo v-flow (with a K&N cone filter) that I'm very happy with.... although you do realize that then have to open up your exhausts. I have B&B exhausts. - dkjporsche - 09-25-2006 Thanks for advice.. - Marty Kocse - 09-26-2006 I happen to have a 99 996 with a Fabspeed cold air kit (and sport exhaust) that seems to work well. I don't like messing with the computer so no chip. With those mod's alone, it seems that my car can finally breathe properly. The first time out, I hit the rev limiter unexpectedly so I think the car accellerates slightly faster than it used to. - Marty Kocse - 09-26-2006 Marty Kocse wrote: Quote:I happen to have a 99 996 with a Fabspeed cold air kit (and sport exhaust) that seems to work well. Will install this weekend and hope it does not ruin my MAF sensor. - Marty Kocse - 09-27-2006 Originally, I bought a BMC high flow filter to go with my cold air kit, not knowing that I had a K&N already installed. The BMC set off my check engine light after about 25 miles of driving. I put the K&N back in and after about a week of driving, the check engine light went off. What I've heard is that the BMC filter is over oiled initially from the factory and turns on the CEL. - ZBlue996Kam - 09-28-2006 I think both the BMC and K & N can be over oiled. It just depends on what you get. I'm going to wrap news paper around and inside the cone filter overnight before putting it on the car. I hope this mod will make my car go or sound faster. I need all the help I can get to run with the up and coming 996 guys. |
