Hi,

Please help?

My shifter jammed in neutral during a 4 to 3 shift at NJMSP Friday.  The car would not go into any gear with the engine on but could be put into gear with the engine off.  The car would also creep forward with the cluth disengaged.

Jim of Dougherty's thought it was a hydraulic problem and bled the clutch line.  That allowed the gears to be shifted by using double clutches and force.  Thanks Jim!

I was able to get the car home in 4th gear. My GPS showed 65 MPH and the RPM was constant, no slipage.

Sunday night I took the car to my local Porsche dealer (only 2 miles from my home too bad Dougherty's was too far).  When I started the car the shifter was working normally, after a few shifts it had to be double clutched again.

The dealer's assesment is that the hydraulics are not the problem but it is mechanical.  A complete overhaul of the clutch would be needed.  The clutch in the car now has only 40K on it.

The two solutions are poles and $$$ apart.

David, if you can shift it with the engine off, and it creeps forward when the engine is running and the clutch is depressed it pretty much limits the problem to lack of disengagement.  That would be one of 2 things, either the clutch is not releasing due to insufficient throwout travel, or the clutch disk is dragging between the pressure plate and flywheel.

Since bleeding helped somewhat, I would look at the clutch slave cylinder first, and then the clutch master cylinder 2nd.  Only after I knew that both were working properly would I pull the trans and look at the clutch.
