With the close of 2009, there are many of us whose helmets are now expired. What does one do with an expired helmet? Do they get thrown away, can they be used by passengers? And lastly, does that mean that the helmets that are coming out are now going to be designated as SA2010?

Cannot be used by a passenger, they hit just as hard as the driver.  Unfortunately, an expired helmet is like a used toothbrush.

The club has a collection of loaner helmets that are used for AX.  They are very old and could use some newer helmets to refresh the fleet.  AX does not have the restrictions on helmets that DE does.

Great idea- I'll donate mine.

BTW, what are the DE requirements as of next season?

I posted this a little while ago:

Since I (and surely others) have a SA2000 helmet, do I need to replace it for the start of the 2010 season, or can we wait till the SA2010 helmets come out?

I just don't like the idea of spending $$ in the spring for something that is superceded by a newer rating 6 months later.

...and Mike's reply:

Lou,

The new helmets won't be out until the end of 2010 so the new helmets won't be required until 2011....

Helmets retire after 10 years based on the date of their Snell Certification.  So SA or M helmets with Snell 2005 or 2010 are accepted.  Helmets with Snell 2000 Certification need to be retired in 2011.

Brian, I will be up there during Christmas and will bring my helmet to donate. It's still in very good condition. Where can I take it to drop off?

All the loaner helmets are presently stored at my house.  120 S. Bishop Ave, Springfield, Pa 19064.  My cell is 215-519-4140 to coordinate.
