I did something stupid- advice needed - Vidal - 09-07-2015

I filled up the gas tank on my '84 Carrera Cab and as I was driving away from the pump realized that I had forgotten to reset the trip odometer, something I always do as a double check should my gas tank gauge ever fail. So, I hit the reset button.........while I was still moving so some of you know what this resulted in. Yep, I probably broke one of the odometer gears and my odometer isn't working. Time for repair.

I'm tempted to try and fix it myself but for something like this prefer to have it professionally done so it can get a thorough cleaning and tune-up. From some research I see there are two main shops for this type of repair, both in CA: North Hollywood Speedometer, and Palo Alto Speedometer. Anyone have experience with either outfit? One better than the other? Any advice would be appreciated, particularly if you've experienced the same thing.

Thanks!
V

I used North Hollywood and was completely satisfied with their service, turn-around tim and prices. In fact, when they returned it, I installed the wires wrong and smoked the electrics. They cheerfully took it back and repaired my damage for less than a hundred. I can't reccomend these folks highly enough.

The gears on my odometer broke, I ordered them online and found a write up on Rennlist that I followed (I am not very handy with tools and don't even do my own oil change, just to give you a sense of my technical abilities) The tricky part is removing the speedometer needle, they are very delicate. There is a tool you can use to help, you are welcome to borrow mine. replacing the gears was easy. It took about an hour to do.

Chris and Trevor, many thanks for your input. Greatly appreciated! I hope to get this fixed soon either professionally or by myself.
