recently, the turn signal light (left side) started blinking very quickly.  the manual identified this as a bulb being out.  I removed the headlight assembly, figured out which bulb to change (not exactly identified) and replaced the bulb.  Guess what?  That's right, no change.  The front bulb doesn't work and the rear blinks quickly.

any other suggestions?  My car has Xenon lights and is a 2003 996

Steve, on some european headlight assy's the malfunction will continue if the contact points on the bulbs are not the same (color) on the left & right side bulb. I know it may sound odd but try replacing the pass front t/signal bulb as well. Additionally, the 996 might be like the 203 body Mercedes (C-Class) in the t/s wiring harness would fail at the connector for the socket. That might be something worth looking into as well. Best of luck.
