Seasonal Insurance

For years I have put my 993 in storage for the winter and my insurer "laid the car up" meaning cancelled the collision coverage during those months. 

One of my clients just sent me an interesting read on the subject that changed my mind.  Might change yours too?

The way I read it, dropping collision would be OK because the vehicle still has minimum PA coverage.  I'm not an insuranceologist, but I don't think you'd be covered by homeowner's if there was damage to the car in that case.

I was going to do this (drop all insurance for the winter) a few years ago and my agent told me I would have to return my plate and pay two (2) fees, one to return the plate and then again to get it back.  Didn't seem worth it.

I think we have a few insurance type people who could chime in.

My read tells me that I would not have insurance coverage on the other vehicles on the policy during the lay up period.

The document has the phrases "dropped the insurance", "where owner does not have financal responsibility", and "cancelled coverage for a vehicle".

Wouldn't that mean that if you dropped the collision, but still had the PA minimum insurance coverage, you would still be covered for medical?

C'mon insurance people, chime in.

Guys,
Each year with Allstate, I remove my collision and liability coverage and only retain comprehensive (theft, fire, vandalism) over the winter. I was informed by my agent, that if I dropped all coverages, then I would have to surrender my plate. But by keeping comprehensive, I can keep my PA plate and also I still have coverage if something were to happen to the car while sitting in the garage. I have not had a chance to read the above mentioned article but will do so later tonight.

I own an insurance agency and get calls like this all the time. To me, there is NEVER one answer for insurance questions because there are so many factors - however, in the case of a Porsche that is stored away for the winter, removing collision def saves money during the winter months while still keeping the car covered for theft/fire/vandalism/etc --- if anyone has any other specific questions feel free to PM me.
