I am in the process of purchasing a 1987 911 with 53,000 miles. The dealer is offering a 3rd party warranty through Preferred Warranties,Inc. of Orwigsburg,Pa.
Does anyone have any experience with this company or with 3rd party warranties in general? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks
Allan

I'm not familiar with 3rd party warranties, but make sure that you have a prepurchase inspection (PPI) performed on the car.

My wife is big on getting warranties. When we bought our '90 C2, the deal closer for her was the fact that they offered a 3rd party warranty. They would honor any repair and work with the company (and, if we had the work done by their shop, the deductable was $0). Fortunately, we never put that policy to the test.

However, when the 4 year factory warranty on our CLK was about to expire, our credit union offered an additional 3rd party plan, $0 deductable, covering nearly everything. During the warranty period, I had 2 occasions to use the policy. Both times, I had the Mercedes dealer do the repairs, MAF sensor (+$500) and A/C work (+$400). Each time, the dealer worked with the insurer, and I ended paying nothing!

Now, for you.... it is an insurance policy, so YOU have to decide if it is worth the risk. As Steve pointed out, get a PPI which should indicate the need for the policy. Figure the policy cost and duration, and rationalize what that would get you over the life of the policy.

I have this warranty from Autosource

http://www.aswarranty.com/plans.shtml#platinum

I've heard good things about them, but thankfully I have not had an occasion to test out their service.... so until something major breaks, then I'll remain blissfully ignorant (and hoping to stay that way). Smile

Allan, I can tell you anything you could possibly want to know about extended warranties and how they work. I deal with them everyday, sometimes several times a day. I'm a firm believer in them especially the really good companies. I can be reached @ 301.215.5463 during business hours.
