Auto Insurance for a street legal DE Car

My current auto insurance excludes any "off road" use of my car.  I have received a bid from one of our sponsors, Wright Insurance, but they require an "estate" policy that includes all autos and homeowners.  Their other alternative is DE event specific insurance.  Both options seem rather costly.  So is there a company that writes auto not excluding DE and "timed events" (autocross)?

Good luck!  You may find a regular policy which is not artfully drafted, and implicitly permits DE (excludes racing), but I have never seen one that does not exclude timed events. 

Can you really hurt your car during autocross?  I have never done one.

But in all seriousness, the two options you have listed (estate plan) and the "per event" style plan are really the best ways to approach it Mike.

Aaron, yes you can do damage any time you race. I have seen Hondas go upside down at an SCCA Solo II and Mustangs ram telephone poles because the throttle stuck, to name a few. That being said, it is rare.

I have DE-only insurance with WSIB (underwritten at Lloyds). It covers for a year, about 10 multi-day events. Lots of discussion on the topic on Rennlist, but the broker I used is:

That's a pretty unusal occurrence at an autocross, Bob, although at a Philly SCCA autocross a few years ago the finish line was a bit too close to an porta-potty. The result was not pretty, especially for the person using the facilities at the time. No injury to speak of, but plenty of embarrassment all around.

Agreed Chris, but the reality is, s*&t happens, so I can understand someone wanting insurance.  I personally have not added track insurance for the past 8 years and never had an incident (lucky I guess).   Racing is another story as you know and it is easy to get caught up in someones elses mistake.

You've been very fortunate and you are a very experienced driver.  I think the OP and others should be aware there could be things outside of the drivers control that can cause the car to lose control, i.e., coolant or oil on the track surface, a mechanical failure on the car, etc. 

Personally, I have chosen insurance with WSIB as well.  There are plenty of agents that write for this company, and as Chris mentioned, there is a well discussed thread about this on Rennlist.
