No write up this is top secret stuff Smile

Kevin as the registrar maintains a list of reserved numbers.  As a newbie he'll assign you a number.  The best way to prepare is to bring a roll of 1" blue painters masking tape.  It won't damage the paint and you can make whatever number out of it.

It's great that you're thinking of all of these things before the event.  Have you read anything that is an intro to DE?

Generally we expect new students to know nothing.  But I will say that I also instruct with NASA (another club) and those students are generally more prepared as newbies and ask questions like I've seen that you have been doing.

If you show up as a new student and you know about:

Turn in points

Apex

Track out

Then you're ahead of most people and it will make it easier for the instructor and you Smile  Instead of spending 2-3 days learning the terminology if you know it ahead of time it's much better.

There are also some great books on driving that I can recommend (and other people on here will recommend)

Darren,
Thanks for the advice- I'm pretty serious about getting up to speed (no pun intended) and enjoy the experience to the max - and be safe! I have some lucky numbers and just wanted to see if I could "reserve one".... but like in football or other sports, I assume certain numbers are already taken!

I have read a lot on the PCA websites, very helpful - one from NNJR PCA on DE, learning signaling, etc. Just about everyone has been great with tips. Half the fun is in the nominclature, lingo, etc.

I know I have a ton to learn, but hey that's what's so cool about this. If I can get prepared in other ways, do tell.

What is NASA? Astronaut training?? Wow!

NASA is the acronym for National Auto Sport Association.  A club that is dedicated to High Performance driving and training, of which Darren and I are both instructors with.  They stage DE's at many of the same tracks as PCA clubs.  Advanced NASA events also include racing.  Our local chapter is called the Northeast Region.

It's a great organization that is similar in style to PCA, excepting that it allows all marques, not just Porsche's to participate.  Personally, I feel you would be better served with PCA, because of most of the PCA Instructor's skill levels and familarity with your car.

Hey Lainey, have you read the Driver's Ed manual on this page

http://www.rtr-pca.org/vroom-vroom/DE/dr...anual.html ?  There's a link to a PDF document that's actually quite well written.

In addition to what George said, NASA is more of a grass roots effort at making racing affordable for everyone, not just those with $100k budgets.  It is a fast growing organization that has driver ed, time trials, and racing.

It's not rocket science.  I can tell you the way it used to be handled.

When we had a new student we would look for a number not being used and assign that number.  Periodically we'll go through and reclaim numbers for inactive participants so as to not get into four digit numbers.

Anyway, once you get your RTR number that's pretty much your number until you stop driving.  So.... you could (and should) go out and acquire numbers for your car.  Some people like the static cling numbers you put inside your windows.  Some people just use blue tape.  As a photographer the blue tape ruins a good photo.

If you go with the store bought numbers get one set for each side of the car and then one for the hood and one for the rear of the car.  I personally like the numbers on the bottom leading edge of the doors and then the bottom corners of the hood and trunk.

Your call.....

I completely agree with Mike.  Blue tape is extensively used by some to protect front grills, wheel wells and side view mirrors from road crud.  As my avatar shows (courtesy of Mike), the blue tape does not photograph well and to quote a caring RTR member, 'It looks ghetto!'.

I did have numbers made up for the small side windows but they turned out to be more a pain the arse than helpful.  In theory, they would adhere to the inner window with a light spritzing of water.  I ended up blue taping them in anyway.

Temporary vinyl from here on out.

Mike,

How does the green tape show up in photos?  Ghetto as well?

Kevin

Actually I was hoping to get a set of magnetic numbers (saw on a website) and they really look sweet! One for the hood and two for each door. I have seen pics with the bogus painters tape letters - I dont' want that on such a pretty car (my little white)!

I can't wait to have my picture taken at one of the DE's - they are GORGEOUS! I have the red 968 (I think that's the number) from the Watkins Glen DE on my work PC. Might have to wait, since I'm wait-listed right now.
