Which RTR members are racing cup cars, and what do they think about them?

Chris,

Mark Reynolds and Mike Pechstein have Cup cars.  My observation is $$$$ to maintain, but awesome to drive.  BTW sending you PM.

Chris,

I just acquired a Koni Grand Am Cup Car two weeks ago.   It's been to tech and the dyno for tuning since and will be at Pocono 1 day for testing Saturday.    Although you probably mean the much more expensive GT3 Cup.

Chris is having those dangerous thoughts again. Josh, great move up the food chain! Koni cars are fast.

As usual I'll answer something other than the answer to the question......

I'm working to turn my 996 into a race car that is in many ways like a cup car but without the right motor. The suspension uprights, etc, are all cup parts, and I'm planning to race her in NASA GTS4.

In my reading though I've run across the 996 spec rules, which are probably of interest to you. The only strange thing is that the rules don't allow monoball strut mounts, but I think that will change next year. Total cost is $40k to build a car.

Josh-
That's fantastic !! Those are wonderful cars and relatively inexpensive to maintain (compared to Porsche cars). Hope your test day goes well.

Chris-

I've never raced a Cup Car, however, did some research into them.  As you may or may not know... I change cars frequently  (LOL).

As for reliability, they would obviously require a lot of attention.  Cost of repairs are very high... by any standard.  The life of the motor and trans between rebuilds would depend upon how hard the usage would be... sooner if racing... later if just doing DE's.   My ultimate decision to pass was that you would need sponsors to make it feasible.  If sponsors were secured, I think they would be a hell-of-a-ride!!! IMHO.

Thanks guys and to Todd & Meenan for their advice.   The goal was to find something inexpensive to repair and safe (full cage, fire suppression, fuel cell).    As for plans...I'll really happy with DE for the foreseeable future and have a lot to learn yet.

Sounds like Chris is up for a new challenge too.

Josh,

I just met a nice woman at Lightning who drives a GTI that is planning on joining us at MAW.  I told her to look for the two of you.  Is Jenn going to drive the Bunny or the Koni car?
