I agree with the Joe Strummer comment.
I'm surprised no one mentioned The Clash. I'm from the era of the Beatles, Stones , Who & Zeppelin, but in my mind The Clash should be on everyone's short list of best bands. Whether you rank them for their political or musical sensibilities, they are truly impressive.
There was also a dynamic similar to the Lennon-McCartney tension in the Joe Strummer-Mick Jones partnership.
