Actually my philosophy is simpler than that - always try to do the right thing and the world takes care of itself.
Public opinion has never mattered much, as what is popular and what is right are not necessarily the same thing. It's always better to do the right thing than be popular.
Additionally, you have to bear in mind that those that are vocal do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the majority. A loud voice doesn't make you right, it just makes you noisier.
