The old pit lane exit can be seen in the right side of this photo... it was only separated from mid-corner of turn 1 by that small section of gravel. It was a real hazard, and there was always gravel kicked up in the area. If you took a late pass or took turn 1 off-line, you were driving through all that loose debris.
The new lane appears to be much better designed with a clear distinction between it and turn 1. It should also promote a better blend line, with better visibility for those coming out of turn 1. I haven't seen any pics of the extended pavement at the end of turn 1, but it sounds like a great idea.
