But I would hazzard a guess (answer) to your question.... the reason there are more DE'ers than AX'ers is that DE is more fun.
A day of AX consists of a handful of 60 second runs, a day at the track is roughly 80 minutes of track time. Unless you're at Pocono and then it's sit around in the fog for the morning and then go out in the afternoon.
