Adam, my 87 944 S8 has a set of stock 18" 996 wheels & tires on it, they bolt up without any issues... Depending on where you live you could come by & check them out on your car, I will also be at doughert'y tech next saturday.... P.S. tires choices for the 996 wheels are unlimited....
