I appreciate all the romantic commentary from the purists, but I'm sure that Alan McNish's tumble last year got many folks thinking about enclosed vs. open cars. I'm still amazed he walked away from that crash, a fact largely credited to the carbon fiber monocoque and cockpit.

A year or two earlier when he was running in the open cockpit Audi might have ended quite differently.
