Hold on. Before blaming the sending unit, be sure that the connection at the sender is not loose. I had the same problem, and when Jeff Haas reconnected it for me it worked perfectly. Also, it will read higher at idle, and drop upon acceleration. These are only to be used when the oil is warm, and you are on a level surface with the engne idling. When I first went to the track, a mechanic friend advised me to fill the oil so the guage will just sit over the red zone when hot. I took this advice and never had a problem. On the other hand, I know of two folks that overfilled, and ended up with filthy, oily engine compartments.
