Hi all. I'm a new P-car owner, and would love to try out an AutoX session. Planning on coming this Sunday to Warminster, but it can be a bit intimidating...(you all remember your first time?)

Some questions:

It looks like a stock '07 CaymanS is in the "SS" class. Still just show up at 11:30 for the RTR sub-group?

I've watched a few AutoX events before, and the amount of gear that some drivers pull out of their trunks is overwhelming (spare tires, compressors, chalk, etc...) Can I just show up with a car and go?

Other than not plowing into cones all day long, anything worth doing to protect the car? Taping, etc... Am I a fool for bringing a new car to autoX? How much damage, even minor/cosmetic, can I do?

Thanks for any tips/advice,
John

Hey John - delighted you are coming along - you'll have a great time.

In response to you questions:

it can be a bit intimidating...(you all remember your first time?)  Yes, I only lost my virginity last year and have only done it 6 times since ... same goes for autoX

It looks like a stock '07 CaymanS is in the "SS" class. Still just show up at 11:30 for the RTR sub-group? YES. Try to park next to us on far right hand side and introduce yourself - we'll show you round and help with treg and tech etc

I've watched a few AutoX events before, and the amount of gear that some drivers pull out of their trunks is overwhelming (spare tires, compressors, chalk, etc...) Can I just show up with a car and go? YES - most of us have nothing either as do this for  casual fun, not seriously like the SCCA boys (well except Nick B). You can turn up with nothing and borrow everything you need. Suggest bring soda, sun cream and hat.

Other than not plowing into cones all day long, anything worth doing to protect the car? Taping, etc... Am I a fool for bringing a new car to autoX? How much damage, even minor/cosmetic, can I do? Might get stone chip if unlucky - we are running PM so course should have been cleaned by am session. I will bring tape if you want to tape up your lurrvvly car - but most don't

Thanks for any tips/advice -- Just Relax, You will have a fab time. First event- just take in all in, focus on the course, do the novice course wlak with experienced person, don't push too hard first time and each time you will get better.

Last piece of advice -- try not to beat us at your first event!

Beth - anything else to add??

Thanks for the welcome, and advice. Hope to see you on Sunday; I'll be the white Cayman with the orange streaks on the front corner (at least by the end of the day...):?

Welcome John!

Glad you're joining us Smile Steve did a good job with your questions, but just to add...

Class letters for you will be RSS plus you will be asked to pick your car number. You can use white shoe polish (foam top applicator) on the window or painters tape, but must contrast so it's easy to see from a distance. Folks working the course need to be able to see it as the cars are charging past them, so make sure it's on both sides and ~8 inches high, minimum.

Empty the car of loose items i.e. cd's, change, umbrella, etc. before going to the tech line.

What can happen to your car--if you clobber a pylon you may get anointed with some sacrificial cone blood (orange scuff) on your Cayman which comes off easily. Otherwise, nothing more to worry about than if you took it out for a run to the store.

Watch as many cars run as possible so you can map it out in your head... along with the course walks (do as many as time will allow), this will give you an idea of how it flows. Your challenge as a first timer is to stay on course. As you drive, keep your eyes up and looking for the next few gates to run through, don't fix your sight on the what's right in front of you, your brain needs to keep ahead of the car. Look ahead.

Check this novice school on line tutorial out if you hadn't found it:

http://rtr.mywowbb.com/forum3/661.html

Also, there is no on site food vendor, so you may want to bring lunch, etc.... there are some convenience stores and gas stations nearby. Port a Potties on site.

Weather report looks awesome Cool I'm ready... see you there!

Hope we get a good turn out, this event is in honor of one of our own, Al Holbert, who was a Philadelphia Region SCCA member as well as a Porsche icon.  The overall winner gets their name on the trophy which is made from a wheel off of one of Al's 962 race cars.  There are a couple of Riesentoter's names inscribed on it... and the proceeds of this autocross go to the park at Warminster.
