As RTR AX chair and (probably) the only person in the club who regularly does both AX & DE, let me weigh in on this interlectual discussion by quoting a famous American philosopher who said

“it takes different strokes to rule the world ….. yes it does, different strokes to ruuuuuuuuule the world!?

- AX has pros and cons

- DE has pros and cons

- Racing has pros and cons

Ax is cheap, safe, teaches good car control and usually only takes ½ a day so doesn’t cause much grief from the old bread knife.

DE is not cheap, not so safe and usually requires 3 or 4 days away from  home which causes a great deal of grief from the wife … but I love it and I love the social side after the track closes

I have no experience road racing  …… but it seems VERY expensive, bordering on unsafe and unless you know people there, I have heard it is unfriendly …… I don’t know but I plan to start miata racing on October (which is causing an unbelievable amount of grief) so I’ll let you know ………

For the smart novice, I would suggest the following stepped approach is the best way forward:

start with AX then try DE and then try racing

Finally, which ever one you chose - it don't matter to me --  just get out there and have fun driving your porsche

PS - come to my charity AX on Sunday 12th July at Reading airport - 48 slots sold only 12 remianing - follow this link: http://www.motorsportreg.com/index.cfm/event/event.advert/uidEvent/F2466DF4-907E-891D-EB0D2780D465A693

Well put Steve............. and good luck with spec racing miatas. It is the largest spec race class out there and fairly inexpensive.

It's a competition, but when the track closes the social scene is much the same as it is with the DE crowd, and when the racing is close and clean the paddock talk is as good as it gets.

BUT, my comment was tongue in cheek. Let's get back to the photos in this thread. Mike, got some more?

Steve,

As Chris mentioned road racing is very competitive, but the atmosphere is very much a family.  Quite often a racer will help another get his car on the track to compete against him/her.   More time is spent at the track and most camp to offset the cost.  When the track closes the paddock becomes a small town full of local friends.   Occasionally a racer or two show up that are rude, but this is very unusual.

i definitely echo what bob said above!

i'll add that there is practically no words to properly describe the feeling after a knock-down, drag-out race, where two (or more!) of you and your competitors went door-to-door for the entire sprintrace.   it can be the highest high (or end up being the lowest low, depending!), but it IS addictive!   and i've not found anything that even comes close....

telling someone about it is one thing;  making vids and showing them is another.  it is something that has to be experienced to be understood!   you'll see, this october!  :dude:

good luck!

Steve,

Thanks for the kind words.

Now, let's see if we can find a few red cars...

First one is of Kurt carrying the left front tire out of turn seven.
