I too have volunteered many days and nights at church/athletic leagues for no obvious benefit to myself other than personal satisfaction.  I see no problem for a handful of members that spend good portion of their free time organizing the events (and not just DE's) and doing club business to get a small pricing discount for DE's.

I've seen first hand that during these events the board isn't kicking back and driving around.  No, they're going about the business of the club.  They meet with membership, discussing club issues and just managing the events as they unfold.  I do not begrudge a discount equal to a single set of brake pads (other than Pagids of course), especially if they put their lives on the line by instructing.

Wow.  Just when I thought the club may get back to enjoying our cars, and learning to drive them better.

My 2 cents: it doesn't seem that the discount policy is inapproriate.  The instructors I've had so far have all been well worth the price (extra) that I've had to pay, assuming that their discount is absorbed by the non-discounted participants.  As for the exec board members, they probably put in a fair amount of time and effort on the club's behalf, without pay.  A nominal discount seems a reasonable way to express our appreciation for what they do.

Just curious, can somebody do the math and tell us what the actual savings, per driver, would be if the discounts were totally eliminated?  I suspect that it would be maybe the cost of a burger at the track.  I am fortunate that I can easily absorb that extra cost, and I suspect anyone that goes to the track can do the same, given the cost of this "hobby".

I believe that most instructors (as well as exec members) are there, not for the discounts, but for the love of the club, the sport, people and INSTRUCTING. Most instructors afford expensive vehicles, so the discount is not going to make or break the deal wether to go to an event or not. Discounts don't even cover motel nights, let alone other expenses related to going to the track. I've noticed that RTR has one of the best instructor cores of any region, because they like to give back to the club what they have learned from such a FINE program.

My .02 cents
