I recently car pooled with a very bright colleague and the subject of Toyota's came up. He drives an Infiniti and admits not being into cars and he said that he wouldn't know what to do if the accelerator stuck. Being in his late 50s, I figured he had experience with this from carbureted cars.

First, most cars, with stability control, don't allow gas+brake together.

Second, as Aaron states, through it in neutral.

I read a report that if you have a V6 Camry on full throttle and full brake, you would stop in about an extra 100 feet.  The prius might be different because of the whole energy from braking thing.  I don't know.

Yes, already his attorney is backpedaling with statements that they have no plans to sue Toyota, they are not negotiating talk show appearances, etc.

Some other outlets were quick to pick up on the odds that this could be a set-up. I've felt Toyota has been getting an unfair drubbing throughout this. Hope this blunts the downward spiral in public opinion.

Toyota's current troubles were inevitable.  Toyota's reputation has been over-hyped for 20 years.  They enjoyed godlike status, much like Tiger Woods.    In reality, they are only slightly better than we mere mortals.  Now, both have been forced to admit that they are human, and the fall from such a high pedestal only appears to be disastrous.  It's not.  Things are simply evening out.
