Anyone else experiencing recent problems between PennDot registration and insurance? I received a letter from PennDot stating that they received notification from my insurance company (Hagerty/Essentia) that my classic car insurance policy ('84 Carrara Cab) had been cancelled. That was news to me!

I called my insurance company and confirmed that I was paid up and current, and that there was never a lapse in insurance coverage. Furthermore, Hagerty said they never sent PennDot a letter. Conflicting information, and I'm the one stuck in the middle.

Further complicating things is that now there's also a question about my VIN, specifically whether the first three characters are WPO or WP0 ("oh" versus "zero"). As I understand VINs, the first three characters are for identification of the manufacturer, which in this case is Porsche, the code being WPO. PennDot currently has it as WP0, although it's always been WPO since I bought the car almost 10 years ago.

I spoke with PennDot and got the impression the VIN issue is not the main problem, but rather that the policy cancellation letter is the issue, even though Hagerty says they didn't send such letter. Hagerty believes it's a problem of computers not talking to each other because of the WPO/WP0 issue. Still, I'm the one in the middle, PennDot is suspending my plate for 3 months and is demanding I mail it back, and hitting me with a penalty.

Anyone else experiencing a similar problem?

Did some searching on Rennlist. Looks like it is supposed to be WP0 (zero) on the VIN:

Now I just have to figure out what happened with that supposed insurance cancellation letter...
