This past weekend while Shelly was visiting one of her friends, Colin & Alyssa were off to a pumpkin patch with their grandparents I had about 3 hours of "Mike Time". I decided to go to the Lehigh Valley Grand Prix. Not being from that area(thank goodness for navi) as this place was hard to find. It is located directly next to the Allentown Police Dept on South 10th St.

You can tell when you walk in that it is brand new, you go to the front desk to register and then off to the briefing room for an abreviated version of a drivers meeting at a DE event. Then you wait until your heat number is called. While waiting you can go out on the the race deck and watch to get a feel of how things go. When your heat is called you line up on the "on-deck line" for the current race to end. (Try to be in the front of the line so you are seated in one of the front karts) Then the race starts. At first it felt very wobbly in the steering until you get up to speed. Once you get a feel for the track things get real fun. The kart racing was quite competitive. Just like in DE, the longer you are out there the faster the laps become. There is a time keeper and you get a lap sheet at the end of your race. I was pleasantly surprised at how challenging it was. Momentum is definitely the key to getting quick laptimes.

They also have leagues that you can participate in. If we lived up there I would definitely be more involved in something like that. They have party rooms for groups to hang out while they are waiting for their heats. Really not a bad place to go for a few hours on a Sat/Sun afternoon when there you don't have anything to do. I would say bring your own helmet although they do have an abundant supply of helmets to use. From what I saw on Saturday, as this place gains popularity, it will really grow into a mainstay in the Lehigh Valley motorsports community. I will definitely go back when we are up there during Christmas week.

Mike,

Thanks for your post.   It looks like 12/1 seems to workout for most people so far.   I plan to keep the vote in place until after the meeting on the 24th.

How were the karts?   Did they seem evenly matched?   Were they new too?

To answer your question, the karts were pretty cool. They appear to be regularly maintained as they did not have plastic falling off them. They are very careful to tell you during the driver briefing exactly where to stand when you get into them. All the karts appear to be brand new and from the looks of how the drivers were running in previous and post heats to mine it really didn't matter what kart you ended up with. I will say that I found the seating position to be very awkward, I like to sit up and forward but the kart seats are tilted back causing you to sit with the "Detroit Lean". Another thing I noticed right away was when the brake pedal was depressed it immediately killed the throttle so you really have to focus on maintaining momentum to get quick lap times. Like I said before, I'll be back up there during Christmas week, maybe we can meet up for a few heats. I think it would be fun.

I went last night and ran 2 races.   It is extremely similar to Mid-Atlantic who were the consultant to the owners.   The biggest difference is the space...much roomier and comfortable when not on the track.    Also, visitors can view more of the track.

They honor the MidAtlantic membership cards at the same discounted per race rate as their own.

Set for Dec 1st from 3-6pm.   The owner offered to let us use their private room at no charge if we bring 20 members and to display our banner.   I do not see the need for either.    Especially the banner--  If we're slow we wouldn't want to be noticed!Big Grin

The membership rate is $60 that include 3 races, a t-shirt, membership, and balaclava  or two races and the same package for $45.   Helmets and neck braces can be used at no additional charge and both are required.

If you bring your own helmet, make sure your visor is attached (mine was at home and had to borrow--hence the balaclava).

$60 for 3 races, and some other stuff. Seems like a fair deal considering the "fun factor". If you have something set-up for Christmas week, I'm all in.
