The seasons over so my focus moves to improving the car again ( 1995 993) .  This winter it's removing more weight. 

Already done:

-Driver and passenger Seats replaced with Evo II's

-Door Panels and all speakers removed  replaced with 3lb RS panels

-Carpet and sound deadening removed - replaced with 5lbs of RS carpet

-Rear Deck with Speakers & rear seats Removed

- Radio gone

My ideas for the next round - This winter

- AC compressor / condensor and associated components. (25lbs) I really don't drive this car on the street

- Cats - Replace with bypass pipes ( 25lbs)

- Battery - Replace with Optima (25 lbs)

- Remove spare (25 lbs) Always kept it in since I read it provides some crash protection

Any thoughts before I start tearing things out??? Am I missing any other low hanging fruit?

Jeff,

Your at the crossroad.................

1.  Look further down the road and prepare your car accordingly.

a.  Are you going to race?  If so, prepare for the class your heading towards.

b.  With the new rules, the 993 is now very competitive in PCA and same in NASA (prepared GT class).

2.  Add weight back in.  If your going this route, add a full cage ( my next investment).  Car will more rigid and the safety is a must at the speeds the car can go. 

3.  Remove the stock exhaust and go to a Cup header exhaust system ( no heat exchangers).  This is a huge improvement in top end and removes weight from the back end.

4.  Remove the AC condenser and replace with a 2nd oil cooler ( I waited on this and it cost me an engine which you already are aware of).  Leave the spare for ballast since it's low and up front.   

5.  Remove the AC compressor/blower motor assembly.  Better access to the engine etc.  Chip the engine.  ERP bushings, Front brake cooling vents, upgrade to reds on the brakes.

6.  Sunroof delete drops 40 lbs.  Lexan windscreen, front/rear. delete glass windows/ motors for inserts (another 40 lbs total)

This will allow you to run GTS in NASA and prepared stock in PCA.

I would say to go for the full cage and other suggestions Bob said...he built his car up really well...Ill actually have to work a bit to not be passed by him...and Ive got a lil' bit more power than him... ... ....

Hey Bob

Thanks.  I have been thinking about building it towards racing.  It's why I haven't started the 3.8L motor project yet.  But thats another story.

Anyway..I'm part way down your list

1) The car is chipped

2) Big Reds are on it

3) AC condenser / compressor coming out

 

Couple of questions:

1) Any suggestions on sourcing the cup exhaust?

2) Same question on the oil cooler?

Jeff,

964 oil cooler fits in the driver fender nicely.  Mike and I did this on mine over the summer.  He did most of the work and has a good solution.  I have a cooler I took out that should be cleaned before reinstall or just order a new one and have the lines made up.  Car barely runs warm after the 2nd cooler.

Cup exhaust.  I used the Fabspeed setup with their headers.  Works great.  Keep the old exhaust headers to lower the engine on.  The new ones will not provide engine support. 

With upgraded brakes, you run prepared.  With the 3.8 and added prep items you  can build an RSCS as a clone.

Building a 3.8 for NASA is a good choice.  GT3S it's a winning car.

Need some help with the rules.  Tell me if I have this right.

In the the new PCA classification for 2008 my 993 in "stock form would be Class G.  If I have any of the prepared items I move up one class to H where I would be giving up 30 plus hp and 100lbs on average to the group.

The items on my car that push it to prepared would be

1) The Chip

2) Larger Brakes

These are easily removed if I wanted to start in stock G class.  My question is in the stock section item 6 H ( interiors) I have removed my rear seats and speaker shelf and replaced it with RS carpet set. Does this move the car out of stock if I still hit the weight? Thats not as easy to reverse.

I have also replaced the door panels with RS units, but the rules seem to alow for that as long as it's for the install of a full cage which I will do.

This is somewhat academic since I'm at least 2 years from racing, but to Bobs earlier point I'd hate to get to point that I'm ready and realize I need to find a new car to be competitive. I still have the parts..I would hate to put them back.

By the way those ERP bushings are a Bitch at $2500 front and rear!

Jeff,

Remember that the rules do change and new classes are introduced.

When I was upgrading my 944 (then an I car) I could upgrade the suspension and keep it in the same class.  Then the 944 spec class was introduced  the suspension upgrade bumped me to SP2, which my car would have not been competitive in.  So, if I was to club race that car, I could run in the former I stock, in which the numbers are dwindling or revert to the stock suspension to be eligible for SP1.

What's not going to change is that the days of PCA racing with no cage are over.  If you aren't driving the car on the street, the obvious best thing to do is put in a cage.  I bet all of the cage builders will be backed up though...
