Bought my 97 993 last Spring, oil level is fine on the dipstick but the guage is sporadic, even when warmed up on a level surface it is often down in the red. Is this normal?

Sounds like the sending unit in the tank. Granted I have an older (1983sc) but I had similar issues and it was in the sending unit.

Hold on. Before blaming the sending unit, be sure that the connection at the sender is not loose. I had the same problem, and when Jeff Haas reconnected it for me it worked perfectly. Also, it will read higher at idle, and drop upon acceleration. These are only to be used when the oil is warm, and you are on a level surface with the engne idling. When I first went to the track, a mechanic friend advised me to fill the oil so the guage will just sit over the red zone when hot. I took this advice and never had a problem. On the other hand, I know of two folks that overfilled, and ended up with filthy, oily engine compartments.
Hope this helps.

Chris, I agree with that test to the connection. Good point.

The wire that attaches to the sending unit in the right rear wheel well of my 87 Carrera had become disconnected. This, however, resulted in a gauge that read full at all times. Bottom line is . . . never trust the guage. Always check manually.
