Now why do I even watch this auction?  It can't be for the awesome variety of machinery, as they all look the same to me.  I was watching on Saturday night, and was amazed at what folks were paying for a Mustang with a 429.  Even funnier was how the announcers were referring to this a a "rare car".  I actually would have believed them, except for the fact that I saw three or four of these "rare cars" cross the block.  Two were even the same color!  Now how rare can that be?

I have a feeling that the folks paying $100K plus for old Muscle Cars will be in for a rude awakening in a few short years, when the time comes to sell.

Chris,   were they the 429 NASCAR Hemi's ?  I think FORD only installed 140 of them in the Mustang....  The Hemi is $$$$$$   not to be confused with the stock Boss 429....  Joe

Joe, I could have sworn they were Boss 429s, but I could be wrong.  But still, FOUR of them?

Just checked to be sure.  Boss 429s, and a few 428 C.J.

429 Production quoted at 500.  No idea about 428, except that it is the least desireable of all Shelby Ford engines.

The 428 Cobra Jet Mustang that I saw go for over $100K was a 428 Super Cobra Jet.   The "super" is what makes it rare, although I hae seen a number of Boss 302s go for that kind of money.

"The 428 SCJ was first introduced during the 1969 model year. Mustang buyers who selected either of the optional 3.91:1 or 4.30:1 rear end gear ratios got more than just an optional axle ratio! Ordering either of these axle ratio options commonly triggered a few other upgrades as well, including the 428 Super Cobra Jet engine, an external oil cooler mounted in front of the radiator, and relocation of the driver's side horn to the passenger side of the radiator core support to make room for the oil cooler. Starting in February 1969 this complete package could be ordered as the "Drag Pack" option. Note that it was not thought to be possible to order an SCJ engine by itself -- the only way to get your hands on an SCJ in a Mustang was to order the optional 3.91:1 or 4.30:1 rear end gear ratios."
