I was thinking of buying a new 2013 Boxster S. My buddy says he would spend that cash on a base 2011 911 base. Weigh in.

Will u street only or street/track combo.

Street only I'd go for a base boxster and load it with the comforts. The base car is plenty fast for the street, especially if you stay up in the power band. Way more fun to drive a slow car fast.

The same eqt on a new 911 cab is twice the price for a car you'll be driving in 3rd gear all the time on the back roads.

Good problem to have either way. Good luck.

Gotta disagree with Tony on this one. As far as I am concerned, Porsche only builds one car. And that would be the 911.

I just got my November issue of car and driver this morning. It has the 2013 Boxster S and the base 2012 911 having exactly the same performance numbers. I got my approval 10 minutes ago on a 2013 Boxster S picking it up on Saturday. Some magazines prefer the new Boxsters handling as well. Mine with comfort package, Bose, nav, 6 speed manual, is priced at $74,000, that same car in 911 would be $102,000.

Have fun! The Boxster is a great platform, although I'd get PDK.

My wife has PDK in her boxster I love it. But, I love rowing my own gears. I'm not a fan of the electric hand brake.

Congratulations!

You made the better choice IMHO.  I drove both at the Porsche event this summer and loved the dynamics (and look) of the Boxster S.  The 911 felt larger, softer, and more compliant than prior versions.  It was an unimpressive drive even though magazine measurements/ lap times say otherwise.  Of course, the turbo and GT3 variants will be amazing.

Agree also with PDK being the better choice in transmission though cannot argue against rowing gears...

Enjoy!

(Yes, base 911 is still quicker) The only 911's I'd personally buy are GT cars...

Not a fan of PDK (or any other auto/dual-clutch). No problem with MT in traffic...

Check out "Car and Driver" November issue page 124. The 2012 911, base is not quicker then a 2013 Boxster S.

Probably different drivers, different tracks, different cars (intercar variance)..

youtube video above shows Chris Harris doing comparos between a spec'd 981 S and a bare-bones 991 base.  Bottom line between all the video and magazine comparos is that 981 S is now very comparable to 991 base in performance (at lower cost to boot).  Why Porsche doesn't give the Boxster/Cayman similar power and suspension of 911 is another topic altogether....  BTW, I'm a mid-engine Porsche fan. Wink

911 is an automotive icon and Porsche's flagship.  But like I said, I'd only personally buy GT cars (e.g. GT3 RS... all in good time).
