There are a number of weak points on PSS9's.  Search the 993 forum on Rennlist to see more.

I'm thinking this has more to do with the monoballs than the struts, but I'll let you know what I find out.

how old/how many miles are on the PSS9's?  Will simply replacing one shock affect the ride/performance?

I don't think it should. If they were tired I'd get all of them rebuilt. I called Bilstein yesterday and they have no replacement shafts, so I'm buying a new one I guess. There are probably about 18k miles on them now or so.

I think what happened was that the spacer between the monoball strut mount and the spring perch was not great enough, so when the suspension would compress, the perch would prevent the monoball from rotating enough, causing side load on the shaft. The shafts are very strong in a straight line, but put some side load on them and they break. This is just how they are manufactured, according to Bilstein.
