Does anyone have an Idle Control Valve lying around for a 1984-1989 Carrera?  I think I need to replace mine and am too cheap to pay for a brand new one, especially if it turns out not to be the culprit.

Chris

I just cleaned the ISV (idle stabalization valve) on my 964, which looks similar to the Idle control valve on the 911. I just removed the 2 hoses, loosened the hold-down clamps and popped off the electrical connector.

Once removed, I sprayed a healthy amount of carb cleaner inside to loosen all of the gunk, then put 12V power to the connectors to stroke it a few times. You will see the internals shift from ~15% open to 100%, and hear it clicking - this will indicate that it's working (don't try prying the door up as you could scratch the surface and have it jam on you).

Hope this helps!

The last time I hooked up power to mine, it just made a "whirring" noise.  Does this sound right?

I don't think so..............I just get a SNAP and I couls see that it moved from ~10% to full open.

Did you try soaking it with carb cleaner? It may be all gunked up (highly technical term).
