It's Official, listen to WMMR as they announce the totals
First let me say right off the bat....NO RAIN!!!! but it seems the Porsche Club loves the rain for some odd reason, a little more on that in a bit. Anyway, the Porsches started to arrive in a timely fashion, I think the first one rolled in around 5:05 to the Capital Grille's parking lot in King of Prussia. Then at 6pm they really started roaring in and I want to thank all of our parking attendants with light sticks in hand for packing the lot extra tight this year. Relax - I'll get to the totals in a minute. What normally holds 70 cars, we added an extra 100 vehicles in the midst and had about 167 cars woven into the tarmac.
As everyone arrived, they signed the waivers, bought raffle prizes, and ate some fantastic grub provided by our biggest sponsor of Phil-a-Frunk, the one, the only, Capital Grille, just the best steak house in KOP. Let me tell you, there were a ton of nice raffle prizes to boot. The blue raffle tickets were $10 per and the prizes were provided by all five dealers, Conshohocken, Delaware, Main Line, Warrington, and Lehigh which provided the silent auction item - one of the most comfortable office chairs, a Porsche 14way adjustable office chair to be exact, the only problem with it, no go-fast pedal on the floor. Then we had $5 a piece raffle prize where the proceeds went to the firehouse...for those, we gave them away in the WMMR tent and you had to be there to win...this is our way to have a crowd on hand when they announce the total weight.
Now remember in the first paragraph I said no rain, well we were approaching wheels up time, but the parking lot wasn't as filled as last year. My only guess is that a lot of members love the rain because it washes off some dirt before they put it in storage for the winter. Whatever the reason, there were a lot less Porsches in the Parking...I was a little bit disappointed....but not for long because no matter who brings what, it's for a great cause.
Wheels up at exactly 7:30. The roar of the engines could have set off an after-shock from the earlier in the day's earthquake. Once again the fine folks in Blue, that would be Upper Merion Township Police helped with the lights around the mall (I can only image what people on the other side of the lights have to be thinking as they see Porsche after Porsche pass them by), while the Valley Forge Volunteer Fire Company provided the lights and sound at the beginning and the end of our 3 mile plus caravan.
We arrived at 8:15 on the nose but had to wait just over 20 minutes for all the volunteers of Camp out for Hunger to finish weighing and moving pallets leftover from the Jeep club. Then we started in on the fun. They took about 28 cars at a shot and the last Porsche to leave the unloading zone left at 9:28 (coincidence hmmm). While pulling in, there was a Jeep crowd, giving us the evil eye every time a non-Porsche entered the zone. As I said I don't care what you drive but apparently these people do. I laugh in their general direction.
I was walking between the cars, helping to unload and trying to get a handle if our poundage was up from last year. I saw some people bringing Ramen noodles and I'm going to have a serious talk with them...I have your plates so expect a call, but I did see a ton of cans. Cans is where it's at. Heavy lovable cans.
Now I was in the unloading zone early, looking at those pallets the Jeep club filled....we were in for some serious trouble...but I wasn't worried one bit. The Jeep club finally got it. They packed their vehicles, they had drop-off sights throughout our region, they brought trailers filled with food, some serious trailers, packed with serious food. So the Jeep club's total....you might want to sit down for this one...remember we brought with us last year 19.903 pounds. This year....drum roll please.....31,000 plus. They totally got it this year and good for them. They more than doubled their totals from last year. OMG!
Well what about Riesentoter? Last year we had 188 cars...we had less cars this year....and NO RAIN! I'm still a little befuddled about that. This year the total number of cars, that parked 2 wide all the way down 11th Street going both north and south, we had 177. So less cars, means, well you might have guessed that...less weight....and you were right. We brought with us 15,000 plus. They hauled in double of what our Porsches could handle. Remember they outnumber us 20 to one on the road. They are bigger and they can theoretically hold more. They should win..and win every time.
But the tale of the tape isn't over....oh no, not by a long shot. For you see, remember I asked our members if anyone wanted to donate some cash to the cause. Well we did receive charitable donations from our members. $9,700 worth of donations as a matter of fact. This was provided to Philabundance prior to our event. Philabunance has a better buying power then you or I. They can take the cash and turn it into serious poundage. Put it this way, the Jeep club called shenanigans (they do every year, so that's nothing new) as they[Jeep] say it's whoever brings the most food in their cars and I say whoever brings the most food, period. Besides their food drive literal is more of a walk from parking lot S to across the street whereas ours is 29 miles.
Are you still with me....so let me tell you, forget the drum roll...queue up Queen....and sing it to the high heavens as once again we are the champions my friends.....our total with what we brought and what we bought...are you sitting down...you just might want to lie down.....83 thousand and change. Yes you did read that right 83,000 pounds of food....over 40 tons....40 tons. So all of you who couldn't make it this year...thank your members who stepped up the plate...for you guys really knocked it out of the park this year...and it just wasn't a homer...a grand-slam and than some, maybe followed by a touchdown or two. But think about that for a minute, between both clubs, Jeep and Porsche, over 55 tons of food for people who need it the most. That is enough to feed everyone at the Link and Wells Fargo Center.
I want to personally thank each and everyone of you, whether you donated food or cash, you are making a world of difference in many, many people's live. I proud of you, I'm proud of our members....and you know it...our motto, it's not just the cars but the people. Amen for that brother. There will be a lot less empty stomachs because of you and your generosity.
.S. It started to rain as I left the WMMR tent
