If it is right over the exhaust, it is the tank.
My expansion tank on my '99 996 went at the track on the morning of day 1. Killed my weekend. Porsche has a newer tank design to help alleviate the issue. Holbert's replaced a friend's tank for right around $400 (I think). I had mine done for quite a bit more more than that somewhere else. New cap comes with the new tank.
