Just as a point of reference a track a long as VIR can support 50-55 cars in a DE group and 70 to 75 in a race group. At the VIR club race a few weeks ago we ran an advanced DE group with 52 cars and very few limitations on passing. Since extended passing was not yet approved by the PCA board the only restriction we had was no two cars side by side at the apex of a corner. Other then that pass anywhere on the track with a passing signal. Once the drivers got used to giving passing signals in " a perceived straight" traffic became a non problem.
At Parade the PCA board approved extended passing and at the RTR Thunderbolt advanced day it was implemented in the fast group. After doing a couple of laps with cars side by side around the entire track at a somewhat reduced speed this group allowed passing anywhere on the track including two cars side by side at the apex of a turn. Passing signals are still required. I think all the drivers enjoyed this new found freedom to give and take passes anywhere they are comfortable doing so. It certainly gave late passes a whole new dimension.
