The alternator has two aluminum inserts in it, where the bolts slide through.
When the bolts are tightend, these inserts get pulled inwards towards eachother to make up any differences in spacing.
Slide a crow bar in there and pull, then wiggle it out, once its out its fine getting back in, then when you reinstall, the inserts are pulled tight again.
