In our case it's a road race where cars compete to traverse checkpoints answering questions, but completing the course in the lowest number of miles. The checkpoints are fixed, but the route is not.
The SCCA has different rules, where you have fixed course and have to complete them within the speedlimit. Points are deducted for completing a stage too fast or too slow.
