Today it was announced that the Jefferson 500 on May 18-20 at Summit Point main circuit was to be cancelled. The reason given was due to dimenished registration did not make a financially viable event. I do not participate in the event but for the last 4-5 years my father & I have always gone to this event if for anything to admire the cars in the pits or the various car clubs that would have a display out near Turn 9. It was part of the whole beginning of summer ritual that we all have. Plus it gave me a chance to spend some time with my little boy without my wife & daughter.

Why is it that the once crown jewel event of the year of Summit Point Motorsports Park has seemed to have lost some of its luster? I remember going last year and I have to admit there were not nearly as many entries as years past. There used to be some really trick vintage race cars. Stuff that you hardly ever see anymore. Forget about the Porsches, there were things like vintage Can-ams, Fiats, Ferraris, Lotuses, MGs, Austin Healeys, Mustangs, the list goes on & on.

I can only imagine that Brian Redman and Bill Scott must be absolutely furious about having to cancel the event. What is it about going around in a circle to the left that gets people so excited that making right hand turns doesn't? What is NASCAR doing so well that they are appealing to even the meagerest of race fans that the rest of the racing sport can't seem to do to create interest and excitement? If you are in Europe and you are a professional racer, you are a GOD! Here in the states, your name is what? Michael Schumacher, what do you do? But I bet you any amount of money, you ask anyone who Dale Earnhardt or Jeff Gordon or any other nastycar driver is they'll be able to tell you and probably what car and car number they drive.

One of the neatest things about the Jefferson 500 was the nostalgia it had for taking you back into the 70's, 60's, & even earlier. I'm not from that era, but as I get older I appreciate what that race has given me,  a chance to make a connection with my father and his affection for motorsport. I truly hope that it comes back next year.
