I was thinking along the same lines. Possibly the alternator is overcharging but not so much as to throw the battery warning light on in the instrument cluster. I'd say voltage regulator based on that description. Depending on the age of the previous battery, may have been the fate of it as well. Brian, you are correct 12.6v is full battery charge on that car.

 Please let us know what the result was once the car is diagnosed and repaired.
