My worst and only bad experience with an instructor came during my third DE at Watkins Glen (my one and only non-RTR sponsored DE).  I was extremely excited to run on this historical track.  I should have known something was up as my original instructor swapped me out to this knucklehead of an instructor.

My new instructor's ego was the size of the moon.  His instruction was bad but I really couldn't tell at the time.  I could barely understand what he was saying when we were on the course.  The speaker in the headset he gave me was so bad, it was like having Charlie Brown's parents screaming in my ears at high decibels.  He would just continue to turn up the volume even after telling him I couldn't understand what he was saying.  My right ear would be ringing after every session.

The guy wouldn't come out of his camper until 5 to 10 minutes into each session.  His attitude was that he was a great Cup racer and I was lucky to have him for my instructor.  I was really starting to get pi**** off.  Luckily he signed me off at the end of the first day and I was rid of him.  If my liberation wasn't dependent on him signing me off, I probably would have popped him one.

I could go on hours about this guy but...  I have no bad experiences with RTR instructors.

What an ass!  Maybe it's harder to see on video, but for a new driver his line looked pretty good.

Steve,  I would think so, but after reading the follow up from another forum it looks like the group that held the event responded by removing the instructor from their program.

That was unbelievable.  At first, I thought it was a joke, too.  Nobody could be that bad.

No one said instructing would always be easy, but -- with the right attitude, it's always rewarding.  "Dan" hasn't learned that, and may never.

My first student had about 2 track days under his belt, was driving a 350Z, that he had modded to the hilt, on big, fat R888's.  He was a competent driver, but had a real hard time with downshifting and braking (talk about jerky).  And, to top it all off, he was Russian, and English was a very new second language to him.  On our out lap, he started off at full throttle on cold tires, and I thought we were both goners.

I managed to (politely) rein him in a little, and asked him to go easy for the rest of the session, until I had a chance to get a feel for his driving style.  From that point on, he progressed very well through the weekend.  By the end of the first day, we were lapping the rest of Green group 3 or 4 times a session.

Funny banter back and forth... like a comedy routine! I like it when he keeps counting the number of curbs he hits.... OMG what a crack up
